The original female Starfleet uniform concept for TOS, as seen in the 2 pilots "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before", consisted of a tunic and pants ensemble that was virtually identical to that worn by the men aboard ship. One particular difference was a large, rigid collar on the female tunic, as opposed to a small, flexible, ribbed collar for the men ...


A hidden zipper ran down the center of the back for almost the full length of the tunic ...

In "Where No Man Has Gone Before", Yeoman Smith wears a tunic with a more contoured collar design ...

and a loose collar was also seen in the 2nd pilot ...

Ofcourse, the familiar miniskirt design; influenced by the fashion trends of the '60s, was introduced when the series went into regular production for network television.

A couple of different sewing patterns were observed in the famous TOS miniskirt design.
As shown below on a 2nd Season dress, the main body of the costume is observed to be composed of several rectangular - shaped sections that are joined together. A long, hidden zipper runs down the front of the dress (on the right side of the photo) corresponding to the seam line that cuts through the gold Starfleet Sciences patch ...

One can just see part of the hidden zipper assembly in the photo below of Lt. Uhura in a command division outfit ...

In addition to the rectangular-sectioned design; some TOS miniskirts featured main bodies that were composed of interlocking triangular sections of fabric, as shown below ...

As was the case with the female tunics observed in the pilot episodes, the TOS miniskirts were seen with different collar designs. The less frequently used tight collar ...

and the familiar, wide collar design ...
This female miniskirt from "Court Martial" has a shinier fabric appearance than a traditional TOS engineering dress and, coupled with an elegant gold stripe running along the top of the collar; might be considered a formal, dress version of the female uniform. (Similar to the formal, gold-braid accented dress tunics worn by the male principal actors in the episode.) ...

Occasionally, TOS miniskirts were seen accompanied by thick utility belts to attach phaser and communicator hand props ...

And the female starfleet uniforms were color-coordinated right down to the undergarments ...


A rarely seen TOS female costume from "Charlie X" might have set the groundwork for Jeri Ryan's famous 7 of 9 catsuit ...
